Deep Blue

spacer Stork: Kasparov mentioned at one point That he sensed a new kind of intelligence when he was playing against Deep Blue, what do you think he meant by that?
Campbell: When you've been playing chess all of your life, you get a feel for the opponent on the other side of the board. What sort of things they're thinking, what they're capable of, what they're not capable of. And playing against Deep Blue, this entity on the other side of the chess board, he was getting new feelings, moves were coming out that were contrary to his intuition, that didn't make sense at first flush, but when you look deeper, there's this weird kind of sense to them, and Kasparov had to create an image, a mental image model of what his opponent was in order to better play the game. And he had to create a model of Deep Blue that was unlike anything he'd ever created before.

Stork: You refer to computer style moves and human style moves, what do you mean?
Campbell: Computer style moves are moves that grate on our intuition, that are just so strange looking that you wouldn't even consider them in the first place, unless you have some very systematic way of thinking about chess, or a very twisted way of thinking about chess. Computer moves are strange because human beings have this ability to detect the sensible moves in a position and look at them. When there's a move that's not quote sensible, people just sort of sensory out, they don't even look at it, and these computer moves have some deep point since they're looking ahead so many moves. They see some reason to play the move, even though it doesn't make sense, and that's solely because of the fact that computers look at all of the possibilities, they don't dismiss anything.

Stork: Tell us about Frank's reaction in his loss to HAL.
Campbell: Frank was very ok with losing to HAL. It was if, this was expected, Frank had lost before, he was going to lose again, no problem. It was just his way of entertaining himself on this long trip out to the outer planets. And so, you got the impression that HAL was toying with Frank, trying to create some excitement, some entertainment value, perhaps even give Frank a chance to win the game, if he came up with the right moves.
