HAL's Legacy

Dave in the HAL brain room
One film critic called the 1968 epic 2001: A Space Odyssey "the best informed dream" because to an extent unprecedented, and never duplicated, writer Arthur C. Clarke and director Stanley Kubrick sought to "get the science right." Now, in its namesake year, it is fascinating to ask: How close did their vision match the actual developments in computer science of the intervening 33 years?
Where have technologists lived up to the high goals set by Kubrick and Clarke? Where have they fallen short? Why?
A unique and visually rich blend of science documentary, film history and celebration, 2001:HAL's Legacy will take the film's central character, the HAL 9000 computer, as a springboard for the world's leading scientists to explain the current state of areas such as artificial intelligence, computer speech and language understanding, computer vision, computer emotion, ethics and prospects for technology of the 21st century.
spacer This documentary special was filmed in multiple locations across the United States, and in Sri Lanka with Arthur C. Clarke, from September to December 2000. The program will premiere on public television in 2001.
